The department of the History of the Ukrainian Language was founded in 1992 as a result of the division of department of the Ukrainian Language. It is the leading one of produce in Ukraine with the historical and stylistic specializations and it has MA programmes, postgraduate studies, doctorate. Prof. O.I. Bilodid was the head of this Sub-department from 1992 till 1997, and Prof. L.P. Shevchenko has been its head since 1997. The members of the department teach the core courses in the history of Ukrainian language, the history of Ukrainian literary language, dialectology, stylistics, Old Church Slavonic, the history of Ukrainian linguistics, methodology of teaching Ukrainian at school. Major courses are devoted to the problems of the history and functioning of the national language, itoterminology.

The department continues the tradition of historical and stylistic schools Language Studies in Ukrainian . M.M. Maksymovych, P.G. Zhytetskiy, O.O. Potebnya, A.Yu. Crymskyy, L.A. Bulahovskyy, P.P. Plyushch, J.P. Timoshenko and others.
The main directions of the departmental research work are represented by the monographs of Prof. L.I. Shevchenko Problems of Intellectual Evolution of the Ukrainian Literary Language: A Theory of Analysis (2001), Candidate Y.B. Dyadyshcheva-Rosovetska Folklore and Poetic World of Taras Shevchenko (2001), by the collective monograph Slavic Languages and The Modern World (2000), dictionaries (Prof. O.I. Bilodid, Associate professor V.I. Horobets).
