The Sub-department of Hellenistics prepares bachelors, specialists and masters with specialization of “New Greek language, literature and translation”. Professors of the sub-department deliver practical courses in the New Greek language, courses of theoretical phonetics, theoretical grammar of the New Greek language, lexicology, stylistics, contrastive grammar of the New Greek and Ukrainian languages, introduction of the course (specialization), special courses of the New Greek studies, business New Greek, cognitive linguistics, contrastive New Greek – Ukrainian lexicology, translation studies, theory of translation, discourses, theory of intercultural communication, text linguistics, history of language. Professors of the sub-department deliver courses of the New Greek language and cultural studies at the Institute of Journalism.
At the sub-department the following courses of Hellenistic studies are being researched: Ukrainian-Greek interlingual connections (prof. Ponomariv O.D.), contrastive studies of the New Greek and Ukrainian languages, functional and structural grammar of New Greek (prof. Klymenko N.F.),
translation studies and textology (candidate of philology Pereplyotchykova S.E., candidate of philology Savenko A.O., candidate of philology Stolyarova A.A., assistant lecturer Tytarenko I.V.).
Annually faculty of the sub-department take part in the section “Hellenistics, grammatical and translation studies” at scientific conferences of Kiev Taras Shevchenko National University.
Throughout its existence the sub-department organized two international conferences: “Greek orthodoxy in Ukraine”, Kyiv 2000 and “From XX to XXI century” (90 year-anniversary of prof. Andryi Byletskyi), Kyiv 2001, and also the international symposium “Nikos Kazanzakis and Ukraine”, Kyiv, 2003.

For the first time in Ukrainian and Greek lexicology a New Greek-Ukrainian Dictionary was introduced by Ponomariv O.D and Chernuhin E.K (Kyiv, 1 edition 2003, 2d edition 2005).

Ponomariv O.D., Klymenko N.F. and Chernihin E.K wrote the first practical course of the New Greek language for the Ukrainian students (part 1), which is published in the appendix of the work: “Notes of Historical- Linguistic fellowship of Andryi Biletskyi” Kyiv., 1999, issue 3
Approved for publishing is “The Ukrainian-New Greek Dictionary” (compilers: Klymenko N.F.,
Ponomariv O.D, Savenko O.A.). Professors of the department have published a number of manuals: “Basic business New Greek language”, “Greek and Cyprian studies”, ‘Short Dictionary of legal terms”.
Professors Ponomariv O.D and Klymenko N.F. translate from New Greek into Ukrainian : in 2002 there was published a novel “ The Trees that dance” by Asimacopoulos K. (translated by Ponomariv O.D) and a book of a famous Greek academic Ch. Yannaras «Indissoluble philosophy» (translation by Klymenko N. and Cherdakli A.), 2003 in Saloniki there was published “A small grammar of dumotix “ ( translated by Klymenko N.F and Ponomariv O.D) Savenko A.O and Pereplyotchykova S.E translate the works of New Greek literature of XIX and XX centuries.
At the sub-department there are postgraduate studies including specialities 10.01.14 – classical languages, Indo-European languages, 10.02.16- Translation studies. In 2004-2008 faculty of the Sub-Department - Pereplyotchykova S.E, Savenko A.O., Stoliarova A.A. defended their theses.

The Sub-Department of Hellenistics helps to prepare highly-qualified experts for higher educational establishments of Ukraine through purpose-oriented and distance postgraduate studies for such universities as: Mariupol Humanitarian University, Tavriyskyi National University, Melitopil Pedagogic University and Kyiv Commerce-Economical University. Among postgraduate students and researchers who prepare theses on Hellenistic topics, there are representatives of Mariupol Humanitarian University, Tavriyskyi National University, Melitopil Pedagogic University.
The Sub-Department cooperates with Athens Academy of Science, Athens, Saloniki and Patras Universities.
Annually students, who study the New Greek language at Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University improve their language skills during summer courses in Greece. Postgraduates have their scientific probation at Athens, Saloniki Universities.
Students take part in All-Ukrainian Olympiads in New Greek and gain prizes.

The Sub-Department of Hellenistics was founded on 20th of May 1999. Its foundation was caused by the necessity of training linguists and translators of the New Greek language and literature in Ukraine, development of topical issues of Hellenistics became possible thanks to multiplying and generalizing of Hellenic studies at Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University.

Traditions of teaching the New Greek language were established in 1958 by the well-known Hellenists: professor Biletskyi А.О. and associate professor, candidate of philology Chernishova Т.М., who worked at the department of classic philology and general linguistics. Then students began to study the New Greek language during their second year of studies as the second foreign language and got the speciality “Professor of the Greek language and literature”. Parallel with the studies of the Greek language the founders of Hellenistic studies in Ukraine organized the translation of New Greek literature, together with graduating students acquainted the Ukrainian readers with works of the well-known Greek writers, and Greeks – with works of Taras Shevchenko, Lesya Ukrainka, Ivan Franco.

Now the students from the faculties of western languages and literature at the Institute of Philology (philologists and translators) and students of the Institute of Journalism study the New Greek language as the first, and as the second foreign language. The founder of the sub-department is the doctor of philology, professor Klymenko N.F. From the day of its foundation here has been working professor Ponomariv O.D., associate professor Chernuhin E.K. teachers, candidates of philology Pereplyotchykova S.E, Savenko A.O., Stoliarova A.A., assistant lecturer Tytarenko I.V.
From 1999 to 2004 the sub-department was headed by Klymenko Nina Fedorivna. During 2004-2007 candidate of philology Pereplyotchykova S.E. took over as the head of the sub-department. From 2007 on the head of the sub-department of Hellenistics is candidate of philology - Savenko A.O.

Klymenko Nina Fedorivna – is a corresponding member of Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, doctor of philology, professor.
In 1961- graduated from Kyiv State (today National) Taras Shevchenko University.
In 1961—1964 worked in the Ukrainian society of friendship and cultural connections with foreign countries. From 1965 till 1967 is a postgraduate student; from 1968 is a colleague, in 1987—2004 — head of the sub- department of structural-mathematical linguistics at the Institute of linguistics of AN of Ukraine. In 1999—2004 holding two jobs, is head of the sub-department of Hellenistics of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University., from September in 2004 is a professor at this sub-department. In 1986 defended her doctorate thesis, professor from 1992. A method of typological comparison of languages at the morphemic level, offered by Klymenko N. F. is successfully applied by academics of Ukraine, Estonia, Slovakia, Germany.
Under the leadership of professor Klymenko and with her participation, the national treasury of the Ukrainian language «Morpheme-word-formation fund of the Ukrainian language» is created, for the first time in Ukraine the “Frequency valences dictionary of affixation morphemes of the Ukrainian language” (K., 1998) and “School word-formation dictionary of the modern Ukrainian language” is compiled by means of a computer. (K., 2005).

• translated « New Greek -Ukrainian dictionary» (K., 2003, 2d edition 2005) and
• «School word-formation dictionary of the modern Ukrainian language» (K., 2005).
Responsible editor of 3 dictionaries: two-volume dictionary-reference book - «Morphemic analysis» (K., 1981), «Adviser of a business man» (K., 1995), «Russian-Ukrainian dictionary on electric power engineering » (together with Mezhennim S. I.; K., 1992).

Klymenko N. F. is the founder of the Hellenistic department at Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University, which she headed in 1999. During this time were published: the «Practical course of the New Greek language » (part 1, K., 1998), first in lexicography - « The New Greek language -Ukrainian dictionary» (K., 2003, 2d edition 2005, together with Ponomariv O.D and Chernukhinym E.K.), in Ukraine first anthology « New Greek literature in the Ukrainian translations» (K., 2005, a compiler together with Ponomariv O.D). She published several dozens of the articles, devoted to the problems of theoretical grammar of the New Greek language, contrastive lexicology of the New Greek and Ukrainian language, contrastive Ukrainian- New Greek word-formation that allowed expanding Hellenistic studies in Ukraine. In 2005 «Ukrainian-New Greek dictionary” was approved for publishing (a compiler together with Ponomariv O.D and Savenko A.O.) From the New Greek language the work of Ch. Yannaras: «Indissoluble philosophy» is translated K., 2001 (together with Cherdakli А.М.,) Tryandaphilidis М.: «Hard grammar of the New Greek language». - Saloniki, 2003 (together with Ponomariv O.D).

Klymenko N. F - author over 300 published research works. Member of editorial board and coauthor of encyclopedia of "The Ukrainian language" (2000, 2d edition. 2004; 3d - edition. 2007)

Klymenko N. F is a coauthor of manuals of «Learning the Ukrainian language. Advanced course».- K., 1993, 1996; «Word-formation morphemic studies of modern literary Ukrainian». - K., 1998; «Practical course of the New Greek language». - K., 1998.

She is a participant of international conventions of Slavic experts, congresses of Ukrainian language experts, Hellenists, international and Ukrainian scientific conferences. Prepared 10 candidates of philological sciences of such specialities as : Ukrainian language, structural-mathematic and applied linguistics, general linguistics, translation studies, Hellenistics and 2 doctors of sciences.

Works of Klymenko N. F are published in Cyprus, Greece, Holland, Slovakia and Germany.

From 2003 professor Klymenko N. F is a member of a committee on word-formation at the International committee of Slavic experts.

A sphere of scientific interests: general linguistics, Ukrainian studies (word-formation, morphemic studies), lexicology, semaciology, computer linguistics, neohellenistics.

Savenko Andrey Oleksandrovych born in 1976 in Kyiv, candidate of philology, head of the department.
In 1999 graduated with award from Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University with speciality - “Classic philology. Ukrainian language and literature”; in 2006 defended candidate's thesis entitled «New Greek phraseology and its recreation in the Ukrainian translations of Kazanzakis N. and Mirivilis M. novels » speciality 10.02.16.- translation studies

In 1998-1999 by contract delivered courses in Latin at the historical and philosophical departments at Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University. From 1999-2000 is a professor of Hellenistic sub-department, from 2000-2003 had a postgraduate course at the same sub-department, from 2003 works as an assistant lecturer. From 2007 is a head of Hellenistic sub-department.

Delivers courses of the New Greek language as the first and as the second foreign language, introduction to the special philology, theory and practice of translation, topical issues of New Greek translation studies, history of the Greek language, basic business the New Greek language. Performs active work as a chairman of the Ukrainian section of International Society of Kazanzakis N. friends (from 2003), organizer of the International symposium of «Kazanzakis N. and Ukraine», adjudicator of annual all-Ukrainian student competition on the best translation of New Greek literary work.

From 2006 year is head of the Center of Hellenistic studios and Greek culture.

The sphere of scientific interests: discourse-, cognitive –, translation studies and cultural studies of the country, neohellenistics.

Pereplyotchykova Svetlana Evgenivna - born in 1979, in Boryspil, candidate of philology, associate professor of the Hellenistic sub-department.

She graduated from Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University, faculty of foreign philology in 2000 with the speciality of “Romance- Germanic languages and literatures”. From 2003 years works at the Hellenistic sub-department, Institute of Philology.
Candidate thesis in translation studies: “Rendering Nikos Kazanzakis idiostyle in Ukrainian translations”.
She is an author of scientific and academic-methodical publications. Together with professor O. D. Ponomariv and professor N. F. Klymenko she has compiled “Anthology of New Greek literature in Ukrainian translations”.
S. E. Pereplyotchykova hold seminars on New Greek as the first and the second foreign language, as well as lectures and seminars on theoretical courses (genre-stylistic peculiarities of prose texts; Cultural Studies) at the sub-department of Hellenistics.
In 2004-2007 she was an acting head of the sub-department of Hellenistics at the Institute of Philology of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University.
She takes part in the work of the Centre of Hellenistic Studios and Greek Culture, named after A. Biletskiy. S. E. Pereplyotchykova is a jury member of All-Ukrainian Contest for the best literary translation among the students who study the New Greek language. She works as an interpreter and translator.

Anna Anatoliyivna Stolyarova was born in 1982 in Kyiv. She is a Candidate of Philology and an assistant lecturer at the sub-department of Hellenistics.
Anna Stolyarova has finished the secondary school № 57 (specialized in the English language). She has got her higher education in the Institute of Philology of Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University, being awarded a Master degree in the English, New Greek and French languages and literature. She has attained qualifications of Master degree, specialist in the English, New Greek and French languages and Foreign Literature Pedagogy.
From 2004 till 2007 she was a post-graduate student at the sub-department of Hellenistics at the Institute of Philology, her academic supervisor was Nina Fedorivna Klymenko, Doctor of Philology, Professor, Correspondent-Member of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. In February 2008 Anna Stolyarova presented her candidate thesis on the topic: “Pragmatic-communicative dimensions of New Greek legislative documents on the material of criminal, criminal procedural codexes of Greece and other legal texts”. During her student and post-graduate student years she was repeatedly trained at the University of Athens and at the University of Saloniki.
Since October 2007 she has been working at the sub-department of Hellenistics as an assistant lecturer. She teaches normative disciplines and special courses. She is also an author of a variety of articles, dedicated to the stylistic and pragmatic-communicative peculiarities of the New Greek legal documents and the first “Short New-Greek-Ukrainian Dictionary of legal terms”. She delivered speeches at many international and All-Ukrainian conferences and takes an active part in the work of the Centre of the Greek language and Culture at the Institute of Philology.
Iryna Vitaliyivna Tytarenko was born in 1959. She is an assistant lecturer at the sub-department of Hellenistics.
Iryna Tytarenko graduated from Kyiv National Taras Shevchenko University, Slavic Philology Department in 1981 and she specializes in “the Russian language and literature”. Since 1997 she has been teaching the New Greek language at the Institute of Journalism and Institute of Foreign Relations, and since 2001 - at the sub-department of Hellenistics at the Institute of Philology. She is an author of scientific publications.
Iryna Tytarenko delivers seminars on the New Ggreek as the first and the second foreign language and lectures on Cultural Studies.
She is involved in the work of the Centre of Hellenistic Studios and Greek Culture named after A. Biletskiy.
