Department of Ukrainian and Russian languages as foreign languages (head of the department – associate professor Nikolajeva N.S.) was founded in 1991 on the bases of sub-department of Russian language and its tuition as foreign language, founded in 1978.

Since 1992 this sub-department was the pioneer in introducing such occupation as “Ukrainian as a foreign language”.

Since that time department had its leaders: associate professor Vorobjova S.A. (1978 – 1989), associate professor Zaichenko N.F. (1989 – 1995), associate professor Prysyazhnyuk N.K. (1995 – 1996). Now associate professor Abbakumova G.O., associate professor Botvina N.V., associate professor Didkivska L.P., associate professor Malikova L.T., associate professor Nevojt V.I., assistant, сandidate of philological scienses Boichenko N.O. and others are working here.

For many years the leading specialists of the sub-department (associate professor Nikolaeva N.S., associate professor Didkivska L.P., associate professor Malikova L.T., associate professor Nevojt V.I. and others) have been researching such scientific problems as: specification of the Ukrainian and Russian languages‘ functioning in different scopes of speech and communication; linguistic basis of Ukrainian languages with the aim of its tuition for a foreign audience (functional and contrastive aspects); substantiation of the adequate methodical concepts of studying Ukrainian as a foreign one (methods, approaches, models of tuition); modeling of classes on Ukrainian language for different categories of foreign listeners; composing with this aim practical communicative grammars and modern program of tuition etc. Textbooks and manuals for foreign students were issued by the members of sub-department (associate professor Nikolaeva N.S., associate professor Didkivska L.P., associate professor Nevojt V.I., associate professor Vorobjova S.A., associate professor Zaichenko N.F., associate professor Abbakumova G.O., associate professor Botvina N.V., associate professor Malikova L.T.).
